Meet Emma Williams, founder of Emma Williams PhD: researcher development specialist, career coach, and champion of bright minds navigating the world of academia.
With more than 20 years’ experience in the researcher development space, Emma supports talented individuals in universities to build fulfilling careers, often while juggling fixed-term contracts, uncertainty, and high expectations.
At home, life is just as full, with a busy household, three sons at different life stages, multiple diets to cater for, and a business that rarely looks the same from one week to the next.
Emma’s story is a great example of how structure, accountability, and flexibility can work together to support wellbeing without adding pressure.
Before We Worked Together
Like many business owners, Emma knew what “healthy” looked like, but found it hard to stay consistent.
“I’ve tried lots of different diets over the years, and I think I’d come back to ‘you just need to eat healthily’, but what does that actually mean in practice?”
With a love of variety and a schedule that changed week to week, rigid plans simply didn’t stick.
As the main organiser of food at home, she also carried the mental load of feeding a busy family with very different needs.
“I wanted to get focused, not just for me, but because I’m the one thinking about what everyone else is eating too.”
What she needed was structure, but in a way that could flex around real life.
What We Worked On
Emma first joined the original version of the Eat Well Challenge back in 2021, looking for practical guidance and a fresh focus.
What made the biggest difference was not restriction. It was awareness.
“I really liked the daily structure. Those little nuggets each day kept it top of mind. It’s very easy to read a book and forget it, but this stayed with me.”
Tracking became a powerful tool, not as a rulebook, but as a way to understand habits and make informed choices.
“It just raises awareness. You start to see what you’re actually eating, and how it adds up across the week.”
Importantly, the ripple effect extended beyond Emma.
“It created awareness in the whole house, not just me.”
Building Consistency That Works in Real Life
As a founding member of the Forever Fit & Fabulous Club, Emma has continued to build habits that work with, not against, her lifestyle.
For her, the key ingredients are accountability, encouragement, and flexibility.
“I love the Friday check-in. It keeps you on track going into the weekend. And the group is so friendly and supportive.”
With a mix of travel, home working, and changing routines, being surrounded by other business owners who understand has been especially valuable.
“They understand what it’s like to be here, there and everywhere, and then suddenly at home for two weeks. That really helps.”
There is also space to be honest when things do not go to plan.
“You can share the downs as well as the ups, and sometimes the focus is just being kind to yourself.”
Flexible Support That Fits Around Life
Emma has also dipped into Wake Up & Workout Online, alongside her regular gym sessions and Pilates, choosing what works best for her routine at any given time.
It is this flexibility that has made the difference.
“You think, ‘I’ve got to get up and do it’, but when you have, it is such a great start to the day.”
She has built a sustainable mix of habits that fit her energy, schedule, and body, without feeling locked into a single approach.
What Emma Would Say to You
“If you’re juggling a business, a busy home, and everything else that life throws at you, this kind of support makes a huge difference.
Susannah is approachable, realistic, and genuinely cares. She’s not about perfection. She’s about what actually works in real life.”
“It’s very easy for your own wellbeing to drop to the bottom of the list when you’re running a business. You grab something quick, skip the gym, and tell yourself you’ll deal with it later.”
“But having that accountability and that support helps you put yourself back on the list without guilt.”
“For me, that’s the biggest thing. Without it, I know I’d still be putting myself last.”
